The End of an Era, but the Start of an Age~

Three months and three weeks, 112 days. That is how long it has been since my last blog post. At least it has not been 3 years like last time. Small improvements. July was the last month of my twenties and this month I will enter my thirties. Time flies! I am thankful for the time I have been blessed with and pray that God will use the rest days for His glory!

July Highlights:

Movies-

My family and I enjoyed Hallmark's Christmas in July all month long and still have a few movies on DVR to finish. The standouts for me were:

Write Before Christmas

Double Holiday, (this one was a surprise favorite)

Picture A Perfect Christmas

Music-

Taylor Swift-Folklore (Clean) 8/10

What about I like most about Taylor Swift music is her story telling and song crafting. Her newest release surprised me. When I first listened, I was not a fan. The songs quickly grew on me and keep the relaxing tunes on repeat most days. I like all the songs except seven and betty. My favorite tracks include the duet with Bon Iver exhile and the 1.

Favorite lyrics:

“I think I’ve seen this film before, and I didn’t like the ending. You’re not my homeland anymore, so what am I defending now?” – exhile

“And if my wishes came true, it would've been you. But it would've been fun

If you would've been the one.” – the 1

Books-

I love how books transport me to different times and places, introduce me to casts of unforgettable characters, and invite me on incredible adventures. Part of the joy of reading is sharing stories with others. I follow many inspiring Bookstagram accounts and am excited to start sharing posts of my own. I made a little progress on my TBR (to be read) list this past month but ended up adding more books than I completed. It is a good problem to have. I used unique notebooks to record my thoughts of each story and different bookmarks inspired by each read.

Here are my currently shelved books, a mixture of TBR and favorite reads. I have four bookcases in all, not counting my devotional bookcase. Any guess on how many are on these pictured shelves?

The first book I began reading in July was Kringle by Tony Abbott.

Kringle... The title, cover art, and gold-rimmed pages of this book, paired with my sister's recommendation, earned this story a spot on my TBR list.

The origins of a legendary Christmas tale began by introducing readers to a boy known simply as Kringle. Ripped from the only home he has ever known one night, Kringle embarks on a journey that uncovers the truth of his past while preparing him for his destiny.

What I liked:

Book Beauty-The cover art, illustrations, and gold-rimmed pages of my copy are beautiful and assisted in bringing Kringle's world to life.

Kringle's character-I am not a huge fan of stories with males as the lead character, but I enjoyed Kringle's optimism, imagination, and overall goodness.

Supporting Cast-I loved the pirate warriors being portrayed as positive characters instead of being given the role of villain. The little girl Mari was another of my favorites. I am not sure what her purpose was in the story other than to bring joy to everyone, including readers. Last, but furthest from the least, were the elves! I'm partial to elven characters at the moment, especially the jubilant, kind, brave magical creatures in this story.

His-story: Discovering the backstories of well-known holiday traditions was interesting. I also enjoyed the Christian references.

Finally, the identity of the narrator was a surprise. An unexpected twist is always nice.

What I did not like:

Alban's character- I found his wining annoying.

I was also not a fan of the magic of the runes and the author's use of repetition throughout the story.

Rating and Recommendation: Overall I give this story a 3/5, targeted for readers in the 13-15 year age range. If I had read this story when my sister first recommended it many years ago, my final review may have differed. A good one-time read.

The Second book I completed in July was While the Clock Ticked by Franklin W. Dixon, book 11 in the Hardy Boys Mystery series.

"Great Jumping Irishmen!" This was an actual quote from this book. Apparently, it was a common saying when the story was originally published in 1932. I enjoy the unique vocabularies of different eras. The Hardy Boys series is a nostalgic read for me. The characters are well-loved, but this mystery was not one of my favorites. It was an easy enough read and not one of the worst I have read. I liked that Chet was the hero of the story multiple times and the cover art was intriguing. But the rest of the story was all over the place and did not connect well. The conclusion seemed rushed and unbelievable. Still, I look forward to the next mystery in the series. 3/5

Book number three for July was Dr. Frankenstein's Daughters by Suzanne Weyn.

Dr. Frankenstein's Daughters is a cleverly written, fast paced read. Twins Ingrid and Giselle, only identical in their appearance, won me over early in the story and had me rooting for them until the surprising end! This book became a favorite that I look forward to reading again in the future, along with many other stories by this author that I plan to add to my TBR shelf. 4/5 Stars.

The final book I read this past month was Crown Princess Academy by A. J. Flowers.

Crown Princess Academy, was not what I expected. The main characters and plot was darker than the beautiful colorful cover eludes too. I enjoyed the face pace of the story, likable characters, and quick humor. Although I knew there would be a cliff hanger, I was left disappointed by the conclusion. I feel like so much more should have happened before the end; mostly the connections between the "love" interest. Yes, I was rooting for one suitor over the other by the ending, but lust does not equal love. Other than some stolen kisses and physical attraction, relationships were not really developed. Still, I want to read what happens next when the sequel is released Summer 2021. Rating 3.5/5

Next on TBR List for August are these beauties:

What new reads do you plan on checking out this August?

Faith, Trust, and Pencil Dust-Part One

I just reviewed my old blog posts and noticed a pattern; one blog a year from 2011-2017. This is my first since 2017! Three years are too long. I've allowed too much of my life to pass, ignoring God's calling for my life; to write. I have dabbled in writing since elementary school. But, I have never been focused or devoted my time to cultivating my craft. Instead, I have allowed life to distract me. I pray for God's grace, strength, and guidance to help me create a new habit and pursue the dream He has given me. I don't want to waste the talent He gifted me with and continue to let the enemy keep me from using my abilities for God's glory. I hope that from this moment forward, God will use the words He gives me to draw others to closer to Him.

So, new goal! Instead of a blog once a year, I am going to try really hard to post once a month. I will write about whatever God lays on my heart, but plan to include reading and writing updates if the Lord allows it. I want to seek His will above all else. Now is a good time for hope and change. Today is Easter Sunday; A day believers celebrate the resurrection of our Savior worldwide! I am so thankful for Jesus! He sacrificed His life and conquered death so that whosoever will might be saved and live forever in Heaven. Thank you, Lord!

I was supposed to write this blog April 1st, but better late than never. I'm going to start with a few simple writing goals for April.

  1. Write every day! A journal entry, a blog post, a story, anything! Just write.
  2. Make a list of all of the story ideas I have and ask God what project He would have me to work first.
  3. Plan to set deadlines in May.
I am already making progress on my first goal.

I will post an update in May to record how I do.

Now for my reading goals. At the beginning of the year, I made a resolution to read a book from each of the following categories each month:

-A book in a series
-A favorite re-read
-A New Release
-A Kindle book
-A library book
-A book from an email newsletter
-A book from my book shelf

There are so many good reads out there, I feel like I will never make progress on my TBR list. The list above seemed like a good idea at the time that I made it, but now seems intimidating. Then I realized, one book can check more than one box off my list. And I have decided on some simplified goals.

  1. Just read.
  2. A minimum of 4 books a month
  3. Pull from alternate options from the list above
  4. Update progress on Good Reads

Here is my TBR pile for April 2020:

I have already completed Exile, the second book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities Series. I almost did not give this series a try because the main character is a 12 year-old-girl. Due to the age, I thought the story might be kind of silly. But I kept seeing posts on Pinterest about the series and decided to give it a try. I am so happy I did. The characters are mature for their age. But the writing is at a level that is easy to read and keeps the story clean providing a wholesome, exciting read. This book began a little slow, once it picked up pace, it did not slow down until the end. I immediately had to begin reading the third book, Everblaze. I am struggling to put this book down so I can make progress on my other books to read in April. 4/5 stars.

Remnants: Season of Wonder is written by my current favorite author, Lisa T. Bergen. I read this book once before when it was available on Kindle Unlimited, but did not get to complete the trilogy before it was no longer available. I am re-reading the first book before continuing the series. I will save my rating/review  until after I complete by re-read.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before- I love the Netflix movie and can't wait to read the book that inspired the film.

Love & Gelato- I read this book a few months ago and cannot get the characters or story out of my mind. It became an immediate favorite of mine. I was excited to find out their was a sequel and third book releasing this summer! I cannot wait to be swept away by this story again. I will share my full review after the re-read but for now, I'll simply say: I LOVE this book and this should be a Hallmark movie!

Keturah- Is the first book in the Sugar Baron's Daughters trilogy by Lisa T. Bergren. The third book in the series, Seleah was just released. I wanted to revisit the exciting lives of these ladies before launching into the final book. Review to come.

Also reading...

Castles-Contains four short stories by Christian fiction author Traci Peterson. I have just completed the first story, A Kingdom Divided. I will try to post a review sometime this week while the story is still fresh on my mind.

Hardy Boys- I am reading my way through the Hardy Boys series. There are so many! My goal for April is to read books 9-13. I will post reviews as I read them.

There you go, three years worth in one post. There is so much more...Part Two coming soon.

P.S. I just read back over my post and it wasn't as long as it felt like it was while I was writing it.

Once Upon A Time....EAH Trilogy January Book Review

Once Upon A Time...

Those four words have introduced numerous tales for ages. Fairytales are treasured stories that have been repeated from generation to generation. But what if they were in danger of fading away forever? Would you be willing to step into a role and live out the character's destiny to ensure the story didn't disappear forever after?

The story of Ever After High: The Storybook of Legends by Shannon Hale follows some of the most beloved fairytale characters of all time as they attend a magical high school where they are trained to follow their parents' paths. From the time of their birth they are taught they are destined to live out the stories their parents made famous. As long as they follow the rules, they are promised certain endings. The students' second year at Ever After High is known as Legacy Year. This is the year that students pledge to follow their destinies. Once they sign the fabled Storybook of Legends, they are magically bound to live out their fairytales.

For Apple White, daughter of Snow White, and the other royals, following their destiny means a promised happily ever after.  But destiny is not kind to all at Ever After High. What if following your destiny means becoming an evil, powerful villain feared by all when you dream of is being good and kind, a friend to all. What if you were forbidden to be with the one you love because you were destined to marry another? Many students of Ever After High are faced with dilemmas such as these, but, in the end, all choose to sign the Storybook of Legends, fearful of their stories, and they themselves, disappearing if they choose otherwise. That is, until one brave student, Raven Queen, daughter of the Evil Queen chooses to rebel. On Legacy Day she refuses to pledge to become evil and poison Snow White. Her decision throws the royals into chaos and empowers those who have been unhappy with their destinies but too afraid to act. The school is split into two sides: Royals and Rebels, those believe in following destiny and those who wish to write their own. What follows is an exciting tale giving well know stories a new twist.

I have always enjoyed stories of princesses and princes, heroes and villains, magic and wonder. So I thoroughly enjoyed reading this trilogy. It's rare that readers can root for the villain of the story, however I found myself doing just that. From the moment that Raven and Apple were introduced, I knew I would side with Raven. Apple believes that she is good because that is how her story is written, but I find her character superficial and selfish, It's like all she cares about is her own happily ever after. Raven seems more genuine and her struggles are more relatable.

As for my favorite hero or "prince charming", I would choose Dexter Charming, youngest son of Prince Charming. Compared to his older brother Daring Charming, Dexter is awkward and a bit of a nerd. But where his brother is flashy, Dexter is sweet and caring. He is one of the few students at Ever After High that chooses to look past who Raven is destined to become and see her true heart.

Two of my favorite supporting characters are Madeline Hatter, Daughter of the Mad Hatter and Cerise Hood.

Maddie is Raven's best friend forever after and Cerise has a secret past that makes for a fairy interesting story. Raven and readers are privileged to learn more about Cerise in Book 2. There are many interesting side stories about the supporting characters that I enjoyed just as much as Apple and Raven's stories. One of my favorite couples at Ever After High besides Raven and Dexter are Ashlynn Ella, daughter of Cinderella, and Hunter Huntsman; Royal and Rebel. Another cute couple is Alistar Wonderland and Bunny Blanc, two wonderlandians surviving their cursed world by relying on each other. I will let you guess who their parents are. ☺

The third book in the trilogy focuses mostly on Wonderland characters and I have never been a big fan of Wonderland, so it was my least favorite book. But I still enjoyed finishing the story and I recommend the trilogy to everyone who enjoys a good fairytale with a little twist. Shannon Hale is a very talented writer and I have enjoyed her other stories as well. Another of her books I recommend:

I hope you enjoyed my review as much I have enjoyed the world of Ever After High!

Writing Update plus ENTER TO WIN a Kindle Fire from Clean Teen Publishing in their Christmas in July GIVEAWAY!

Good Morning Everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to read this update post. First of all, I have decided to place my retelling of the Nutcracker story on the backburner for now. I was not as disciplined a writer as I should have been, working on that project. I was working on that story for over three years and had exhausted myself with it. I still plan to complete it when the time is right; that time is just not right now.

I am, however, inspired and excited to be working on my new project, a story entitled Enchanted. I got the idea for my story while I was listening to a song. My idea started out as a music video then developed from there. This July I am participating in this year's Camp NanoWriMo, a website where writers all over the world come together to encourage each other to focus on their projects and complete their stories. My goal is to have written 31,000 words or more by the end of the month. Managing my writing time with the demands of everyday life has always been a struggle for me. But I am determined to write each day this month. Even I do not meet my goal by the deadline at least my story will have progressed. With prayers and support though, I believe I can achieve my goal.

So, again, thank you for your encouragement. It helps more that you know. You can read the synopsis of Enchanted as well as a short excerpt below.
NOTE: The following is from my first, unedited draft. Please excuse any and all mistakes. Thank you.

SynopsisFor seventeen years Elisina lived an enchanted life. Orphaned as an infant, she was taken in by her mother’s closest friend, the queen of Valyn. Growing up in the palace, side by side with the heirs to the throne, Elisina flourished into a beautiful, charming, lively young lady. When tragic events rip away the only family she’s ever known, she suddenly finds herself having to decide whether to honor her duty or follow her heart. Her choice could not only threaten her own life, but also the future of her kingdom.

Excerpt: Just as the darkness threatened to fully engulf Gwen, she sensed another person enter the room. She squinted against her blurry vision, attempting to identify the individual. Her oxygen deprived brain, however, refused to bring the person’s features into focus.
Gwen decided it made no difference who had entered her chambers, she was only grateful the Lord had answered her cry and had sent someone to help her. Her rescuer hurried to her side and pulled out an object that, although it was small, caught and held Gwen’s attention. The item was silver in color and reflected the light the sifted in through the windows. It took Gwen’s sluggish mind several moments to recall the name of the object. The person she had assumed to be her savior, clutched a knife in their hand. The blade hovered dangerously over Gwen’s heaving chest.
“Please,” Gwen begged weakly.
She could no longer hold on. It was too hard to continue the fight to breathe. She allowed her eyelids to close, placing her fate into the hands of the young woman who stood before her. The woman hesitated only a moment before plunging her knife downward.

Thanks for reading and following my updates. I hope that you enjoyed the sneak peek. Thank you for your continued support. God Bless.
