And Something Blue (Main Street Merchants Book 1) Kindle Edition by Amelia C. Adams ~ Book Review

Have you ever read a book where you loved the beginning, seriously questioned your story selection ability midway, and cannot wait to read the next in the series by the conclusion? “And Something Blue” was one of those books for me. The story ended up being a sweet surprise. I quickly fell in love with the characters of the small town of Aspen Ridge. The romance happened a little too quickly for me and was, at times, hastily written or awkward, but I was rooting for the couple in the end and was satisfied with the conclusion. 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Story likes and quotes: CAUTION-Possible Spoilers! (My thoughts are italicized.)

·         The bookstore is called Bookmarks!

·         “Bookmarks, the store across the street, was having a 20% off sale on their paperbacks. She’d have to swing by . . . Or maybe she should read the fifteen books she already had sitting on her nightstand. It was a tough call.” (p. 13). The struggle is real!

·         The main character receives a bouquet of white lilies and peach roses. These flowers sound unique and lovely.

·         I may have snickered when I read these quotes:

·         When the main character found the love interest’s online profile, while still in denial that she was attracted to him: “his picture was moderately handsome, but she certainly wasn’t going to bookmark the site or memorize the URL or anything like that.” (p. 57).

·         She hummed again as she walked, wondering what people would think if she suddenly started singing. She could always claim she was a flash mob of one. (p. 64). I would join. Make that a flash mob of two!

·         “His eyes looked sincere, but she’d been taken in by sincere eyes before, and that had led to ordering three double chocolate donuts at D’Angelo’s. Among other various chocolate items obtained from other vendors in town,” (p. 68). Chocolate, the best treatment for heartache.

·         “She couldn’t come up with a reply to that—there didn’t seem to be one in the entire English language—so she handed him the other half of her donut instead.” (p. 69). That works. Food, the universal language.

·         It “was just a little bit awkward—strolling down a sidewalk wasn’t something she’d ever envisioned doing with Logan. Killing him and hiding his body under a newly poured sidewalk would be more like it. They’d never find him there.” (p. 76). Wait, what?! Where did that come from? Just because he was a little rude and arrogant? And this sentence was followed closely with the main character telling his sister, “I’m not the kind to hold grudges or anything.” (p. 76). Really? For some reason I do not believe you.

·         After the main character and the nice guy mutually agree to go their separate ways while they eat dessert at the local diner, “All breakups should be this easy.” (p. 122).

·         “I’ll admit, I bought most of it. Here, I’ll give you the tour. The fried chicken is from the diner—Sloane says hi, by the way. The donuts are from the bakery—oh, Quinn says hi—and Millie sent the brownies. I told her we already had donuts, but she insisted. And she said hi. The potato salad is from the deli at the grocery store. I don’t think I talked about you there, so I have no messages to deliver. And I made the green salad.” (p. 123). The representation of almost the entire small community on this significant first date added to the story’s charm. The main character’s honesty is also appreciated.

·         “I am a little saddened that you didn’t talk about me at the grocery store. Are you mad at me?” (p. 123). LOL, Logan (the love interest).

·         “Logan chuckled and picked up the paper plates, handing one to her before beginning to fill one for himself. This felt a lot better than a stuffy office party. The sun was warm and made everything look like it had a yellow glow, the mosquitos were cooperating for once, and there were no time constraints or social obligations to fulfill. Laurie sighed, feeling content.” (p. 124). This is a perfect description of a peaceful summer twilight. This quote was a close second favorite of mine.

·         “If a guy can’t help out a damsel in distress without getting punished for it . . . A damsel, I might add, who was defending herself beautifully and just needed a getaway horse . . .” (p. 125). This quote is my favorite. Logan for the win!

·         “Oh, that’s right—they were supposed to be eating food. She picked up a piece of chicken and took a bite, enjoying it more than she ever had enjoyed chicken in her life.” (p. 126). Laurie is the main character’s name, BTW. She can be quite funny and relatable when she is not plotting murder…

·         “Brownie or donut?” she asked. “Yes.” (p. 127). Same. There is no other right answer.

·         “Surprise kisses beat expected kisses hands down.” (p. 129). I forgot about this gem. This quote may tie for my favorite.

·         “Why was her heart jumping up and down with pompoms at the thought?” Cute imagery!

·          “Is there some law that we can only do what’s possible?” He stroked her jaw, his touch sending ripples down her spine. “I love you, Laurie. Sure, this is fast, but I’m not going to be any more sure of my feelings in a month or a year or a decade. You are the woman I want at my side, helping me fight my battles and celebrating when we win. What do you say?” (p. 142). Ok, I accept the quick romantic connection. Who can argue with that?

·         “It was just the two of them, two total opposites who realized they belonged on the same coin, and Laurie felt her heart reach out and wrap around his to tie a knot she would never be able to loosen.” (p. 142). Sigh, I love happy endings! I could not have asked for a better one. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

Your fate is not yet sealed...

It’s October! I love the cool, crisp air and the beautiful colors of Autumn! The beauty of this time of year just makes me feel more joyful overall. And it’s also football season!

I did not finish all the books on my September TBR list, but I made good progress.

The first book I read this past month, was Once Upon an Irish Summer by Lisa T Bergren. This was another exciting story, written by a master storyteller who seamlessly wove culture, history, romance, and danger through these pages. This story was a true treasure. I fell in love with the characters and setting. My favorite part was the reference to characters from former beloved stories by this author. 4.8/5 overall

The second book I read was the first book in the Cutter’s Creek series, The Healing Touch by Kit Morgan. The story was a sweet, quick read with beautiful words of truth. The romance seemed to happen a little fast, but not too quickly. I look forward to reading more in this series. 4.3/5 overall

The third book I completed in the month of September was the thirteenth book in the Hardy Boy’s mystery series: The Mark on the Door. I was not a fan of this fast-paced mystery where too much happened but not enough at the same time. The chapters leading to the end were filled with events that never seemed to properly connect for me. The mystery was resolved too quickly in the last few pages. 2/5 stars overall.

The final book for September was Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan. I do not often read middle grade stories, especially those with boys as the main character, but I was gifted this book for my birthday, and I am so glad my best friend shared it with me. It has become an instant favorite of mine. The book spans the lives of 4 young people who encountered individual struggles and victories during the second World War. The main characters’ paths do not cross until the end of the story where the author reveals how each of their tales are interconnected. While reading, I learned details about this period in history I never knew. The characters are easy to connect with and root for. At first, I as concerned that the cliff hangers of each story would not be resolved, but the conclusion of the book did not disappoint. 5/5 stars is not enough. I hear the audio book is even better. I am already researching more books by this author!

Still on my list is The Princess Trials by Cordelia Castel. This story has been added to my October TBR along with these titles:

Currently Reading: The Princess Trials and an Advance Reading Copy (ARC) of Kiss Me Under the Christmas Lights by Cindy Ray Hale

Currently Writing: Krisnoel: The Nutcracker’s Return

When her mother goes missing, Belle is afraid she is to blame. After a startling discovery, Belle ignored her mother’s warnings and continued to investigate her dad’s death. When the authorities determine that whoever murdered her father may also be responsible for her mother’s disappearance, they are concerned that Belle is the next target. For her safety, she is sent to live with a distant relative in the secluded town of Chilhurst.

Belle soon discovers that Chilhurst may not be the safe haven it is portrayed as. The town has dangerous secrets of its own and Belle’s mysterious guardian holds the key to unravel the truth about her parents. Shocking revelations about her heritage lead her on an unexpected journey to the realm of Krisnoel.

The imprisoned kingdom has long awaited Belle’s arrival, believing that she will free them by defeating the false king who has claimed the throne as his own. Belle, however, is reluctant to accept the responsibility. After all, embarking on a perilous adventure in a magical land is not how she imagined spending her senior year of high school. But when the false king threatens to destroy the kingdom, Belle must decide if saving the lives of others is worth risking her own.

Write on Time...

Exactly one month ago, I posted my last blog. For once, I have not let an incredible amount of time go by between posts. August was a slow reading month for me, so this update may be short.

I began the month reading the newest Twilight Saga Release, Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer. 662 pages...and it wasn't long enough! I want more! It was exciting to revisit the world of Twilight and see everything from a new perspective. I actually like Bella better after reading Midnight Sun. My favorite part of this book was getting to know more about the Cullens and learning that Edward was in the background of many of the scenes we believed he was absent from in the first book. I will never read Twilight the same again. I would love to read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn from Edward's POV, but know that dream will probably never become reality. I will settle for reading the two additional Twilight books Stephanie Meyer's plans to write. Although I will miss Bella and Edward's story line, I am curious to see where the spin offs take us. Now if the author would just decide to write Renesme's story....4.8/5 stars.

Dust by Kara Swanson was the second read I completed for the month. From the moment I saw the magical cover of this Peter Pan inspired story I was excited to read it. The author did not disappoint. I always begin reading with an average rating of 3/5, allowing the final rating to shift up or down depending on where the story takes me. Dust exceeded all expectations. The characters are so alive, the plot fast paced and captivating, and the descriptions are incredibly detailed in the best of ways. Trust me, I quickly get bored with too many details. Kara Swanson included just enough detail to paint a world I did not want to leave. I cannot tell you how many times I laughed aloud or cried out in frustration while reading this book. The one aspect of the story that I was not a big fan of was Claire's character. The growth and development of all the characters in this novel is evident throughout the story, but Claire never broke through for me. Even though I understand her final decision, I was disappointed by it. As my allegiance will always lie with Peter Pan over Hook, though, I admit I may be a little biased. My favorite character overall was Tiger Lily. Lily is every inch a fierce warrior princess and tribal beauty. Peter would have been lost without her. I received my copy of Dust in the debut Faith and Fiction Book Box along with some fun Neverland-themed swag, which made this reading experience even more enjoyable. There was so much beautiful writing throughout the novel it was hard to choose a single favorite quote, but one phrase I loved most was, "You were created for more than to bear the weight of your shadows-but you have to choose to no longer let them define you. You have to choose to let the light shine through the shattered pieces." Now the countdown to the sequel Shadow begins...coming July 2021! Oh! This book was so good even the newest release of The Twilight Saga: Midnight Sun could not fully distract me from this story! 4.9/5 stars

Hardy Boys Book # 12: Footprints Under the Window. Another cased closed, this one full of excitement and political espionage! Chet Morton said it best, "There was an awful lot afoot." 4/5 stars

And that wraps up the month of August for me. What treasures did you find in August to read? What is on your list to read in September? Please share you picks with me in the comments. Below is a picture of my September TBR. I have a few books left from my August TBR (Once Upon an Irish Summer, New Beginnings, and The Princess Trials) along with book #13 in the Hardy Boys mystery series: The Mark on the Door, and a recommendation from @moonlightbookreviews Echo. Also Grimm's Legacy if my library ever contacts me to let me know my hold is available...

The Grimm Legacy (The Grimm Legacy, #1) by Polly Shulman

In other news, I celebrated my 30th on August 19th. My mama, sister, and I camped out in the backyard in our camper. We played board games and laughed until we could not breathe. I am thankful to be blessed with another year of life and for the best family and friends! Here are some of the sweet gifts I was given along with a birthday selfie.

Enjoy the first month of my favorite time of year, everyone! Thanks for reading!
